You are here: Home | Yap Island Missing Air Crew Search Trip-October 2005 | Interview with Maria Golfar-Yap Island
Our first interview with a Yapese elder was with Maria Golfar. She is the grandmother of one of the staff at the Manta Ray Hotel. Maria did not speak English so we asked questions of her through our guide, Theo, and her grandson, Richard.
Maria told us her story of seeing a smoking plane "the color of money" being attacked over the island. She said the plane flew very low and in a group of three. Although frightened by the sight she was unable to pull herself away as she watched the plane crash into the water west of the island. Maria was able to direct us to the distinctly bent tree that still stands from where she watched the plane crash.
