The Ens. Joseph Cox Memorial took place as planned and everyone who spoke did an amazing, thought provoking and inspiring job. The weather was hot, humid and unfortunately rainy but in a way it seemed to fit the circumstances, even though the memorial was not a sad occasion, no one really seemed to mind the rain (perhaps except for CDR Gibb due to his white uniform). Several distinguished guests spoke including, the Governor of Yap, Sebastian Anafel, the US Ambassador to the Federation of Micronesian States, Peter Prahar, Commander Bryce Gibb, representing Admiral Bushong, Mark Noah of History Flight and of course, Pat Ranfranz. The three members of the Cox family and the two members of the Holding family sat in the front row and received a US Flag from CDR Gibb and a small marble engraved plaque from Pat Ranfranz. It was a very emotional experience for all family members and several members of the audience. We were very fortunate to have Evan and Maryann available to take photos and video that we will share as soon as it’s available. After months of fretting over the memorial dedication Pat was finally able to relax once it ended. After the memorial, the families and others were invited to the village of Ngariy to enjoy a traditional Yapese dance. The colorful customs were beautiful and the dance was very interesting and the girls did a great job. We got to tour the village’s new men’s house and watch the tide come in. Everyone was given a nunu (beautiful flower headband) by the girl’s in the dance. The flowers smelled wonderful and everyone looked like they belong on the island. It was a beautiful way to end this year’s trip. Please feel free to send comments and questions to Pat Ranfranz: pat@missingaircrew.comClick on a thumbnail image below to view the full sized image.
